our roots

The Athena B has been serving traditional Fish & Chips for over 40 years. Mary, the owner, was given the keys to the shop in 1996 by a close family friend whom we affectionately called “Uncle” Hambis. He was a hard working Crypriot man who spent years perfecting the craft of Fish & Chips, and when he was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer, he decided to pass his business and his knowledge of making great Fish & Chips on to the current Athena B Family.

Originally a Wet Fish Shop, the Athena B Fish & Chip Shop was taken over by Uncle Hambis some time in the early 1980s. The restaurant was originally named after the Greek cargo ship that crashed ashore the beach of Brighton in January of 1980. Uncle Hambis seized the opportunity and the buzz surrounding the circumstances, and the shop is now one of the few remaining memories and namesakes of the famous event.

Our family believes in the values that were laid out to us by Uncle Hambis before his passing: that the best food is made fresh and from scratch, and to never compromise on quality. That’s why every chip we serve is peeled and and chipped freshly on-site, every pot of mushy peas is prepared daily in-house, every dollop of home made tartare sauce is mixed by hand, and every piece of sustainably sourced fish is carefully selected and filleted before lovingly dipped in our signature batter and fried in our sustainably sourced vegetable oil.

It’s taken a long time to get things right, and we hope to pass our way of doing things to the future generations so that our community can enjoy our Great British Fish & Chips for many years to come.

With Love,

The Athena B Family
